THINGS DESIGNED BY COMPANION SPECIES

WHEN IT COMES TO THE CYBORG (SOMEONE WHOSE PHYSICAL ABILITIES ARE EXTENDED BEYOND NORMAL LIMITATIONS BY MAN MADE AUGMENTATIONS ADDED TO THE BODY) I DO NOT WANT TO FALL INTO THE TRAP OF REPRESENTING THIS STATE THROUGH MECHANOID BEINGS AND OTHER SUCH CONCRETE SYMBOLOGY.

INSTEAD, I WILL APPROACH THIS THROUGH AN ABSTRACTION - LINKS AND NODES. THESE SEEM TO ME TO SUMMARIZE THE ESSENCE OF THE CYBORG, WHICH IS THE COMMUNICATION BETWEEN BIOLOGICAL AND ARTIFICIAL PARTS.

“THE CYBORG IS A KIND OF DISASSEMBLED AND REASSEMBLED, POSTMODERN COLLECTIVE AND PERSONAL SELF. THIS IS THE SELF [WE NOW] MUST CODE.”

― DONNA HARAWAY, SIMIANS, CYBORGS AND WOMEN THE REINVENTION OF NATURE

APPEARANCE

WHILE THERE SEEMS TO BE AN AGREEMENT THAT THE CYBORG IS A HYBRID BETWEEN ELECTRONIC AND NEURAL MATTER THAT HAS BECOME PROMINENT IN OUR EXISTENCES ONLY RECENTLY THROUGH THE DIGITAL REVOLUTION, I DO WONDER ABOUT THIS: GLASSES, SKIS, HELMETS, ARMOR - INDEED EVEN THE VERY FIRST SHOE THAT CROMAGNON MAN PUT ON HIS FEET TO AUGMENT WALKİNG -

WHY WOULD THESE NOT QUALIFY FOR CYBORGHOOD?

“WE NEED A HOME IN THE PSYCHOLOGICAL SENSE AS MUCH AS WE NEED ONE IN THE PHYSICAL: TO COMPENSATE FOR A VULNERABILITY. WE NEED A REFUGE TO SHORE UP OUR STATES OF MIND, BECAUSE SO MUCH OF THE WORLD IS OPPOSED TO OUR ALLEGIANCES. WE NEED OUR ROOMS TO ALIGN US TO DESIRABLE VERSIONS OF OURSELVES AND TO KEEP ALIVE THE IMPORTANT, EVANESCENT SIDES OF US.”

― ALAIN DE BOTTON, THE ARCHITECTURE OF HAPPINESS

“I LOVE CATS BECAUSE I ENJOY MY HOME; AND LITTLE BY LITTLE, THEY BECOME ITS VISIBLE SOUL.”

― JEAN COCTEAU

INDULGENCE

“IT IS DULL, SON OF ADAM, TO DRINK WITHOUT EATING," SAID THE QUEEN PRESENTLY. "WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE BEST TO EAT?"
"TURKISH DELIGHT, PLEASE, YOUR MAJESTY," SAID EDMUND.”

ARTICULATION...

This project started out as part of a tutorial to show my graphic design students how to apply a visual identity to a wide range of products. From where it took on a life of its own.

I wish to thank the many generous people who put free to use mockups, vectors, clipart, png images and videos online for obsessive types like me to use. The resources were gathered from: vecteezy.com, videezy.com, videos.pexel.com, pngmart, pngtree, freepik, pixeden, goodmockups, graphicburger, and mockupworld.
